Fishing in the Tobacco Valley

There are plenty of opputunities to fish in the Eureka area. For kids we have a well-stocked trout pond near the local fair grounds on Osloski Road. Throw out a bobber with a nightcrawler on a hook or try a panther martin spinner to catch a rainbow trout.

The Tobacco River also has rainbows and Kokanee in the fall. Flies and spinners are ideal lures to use in the holes in the river. September 15th is when snagging season opens for Kokanee salmon. Try your hand at snaggin these red beauties; remember, they are quite tasty smoked. Use a heavy line and a weighted, orange-colored treble hook. The daily limit is twenty.

Lake Koocanusa is the place of choice to catch Kokanee salmon. They may only be about 11 inches long, but remember, these little fish are tasty when smoked properly. Use a wedding ring (sold in one of our local kits) or a triple teaser lure topped off with a maggot. Flashlight trollers help attract the salmon and using oatmeal as chum will give you some added advantage.
